pdfcrop
Another thing I’ve had to look up twice regarding latex.
When saving a figure as pdf in MatLab, margins are enourmous.
This one fixes by running pdfcrop -margins 10 figure.pdf figure.pdf.

Hurra lite pengar tillbaka från SJ! Men tycker det är fult att man bara får hälften så mycket i kontanter som man skulle fått i värdebevis.

Samsung SyncMaster 206bw flashing problem →
I woke up and turned on my SynMaster this morning, after there being no problems the evening before, the screen was black (as when it’s off) except for a flash every 5 seconds, where the contents of what the screen should show was shown, for about a tenth of a second.
It kept doing this, flashing the contents every 5 seconds. I tried pulling out the cables and putting them back in again.
I...

– Timon of Athens - Act IV, Scene III
In Better Off Ted’s third episode a joke was that Veridian Dynamics’ company motto was “Money Before People”, and that it looked more heroic in latin.
From what I can work out from dictionaries and some introductary grammar sites, this should be Pecunia Populo Precedo.

Copyright violation
Well known is the fact that the owners and maintainers of filesharing website The Pirate Bay are being charged for accessory to copyright violation. This is of course not very interesting and all in all humbug.
Ofcourse I understand that the primary reason for going on with this huge media spectacle of a trial is so people will get the exposure of the news that using The PPirate Bay is illegal,...

Math ed.
I just read a swedish article about a new study that shows how the swedish education system is falling behind other countries who are participating in TIMSS. In this particular case students of the 8th grade.
They quote a few people, among others an 8th-grader and a teacher of 8th grade math.
The 8th-grader claims most of the math is stuff you’d only use if your are a physicist. And the...

LaTeX things I've had to look up twice.
To write a normal multiplication dot, the command is \cdot.
To write a “divides-symbol”, or “|”, the command is \mid.
After you’ve put a blahblah.sty file in a blahblah directory of the tex/latex directory you need to run the mktexlsr command!
I’m getting increasingly interested in making an implementation of GPG for the Google Android system.
Though probably not until I get an Android-phone though.
Yesterdays episode of Heroes was very good. Not compared to the first season, but very much above the avarage, making me regain hope in the series.
The introduction of the other company is an awful construct but a very necessary one, in the second season they completely ruined the original Company. Very visible by the fact that Nathan can bring Tracy, who he has known for about 10 hours, to the...

The calendar of my dreams
I should look along the lines of Windows Live Calendar. it should be as easy to make new appointments as in Windows Calendar, but not as slow to change times. It should be able to make completable tasks on specific dates. (An all-day event with a checkbox would suffice.) It should easily sync with my phone, so that I can have all of my 20-something calendars visible (at least on a windows mobile)....

When in the cellular biology -building, should one get nervous when a newly hatched spider promenades across the table?
Bloom
On the way to my first meeting of today I got some nervous twitching.
Everything is blooming, the sun is shining, through the clouds even. Wildflowers are invading every open area visible (along with study groups).
I have no way to document this!
Here, it is clear during the eight months of “winter” that all landscaping is based on the short period they call “summer”....
Temperature
The summer is invading.
HOW am I suppose to be able to learn complicated relations when I just want to sit in the warm air with an espresso and enjoy not freezing?
Though it is as awesome as it gets now, I’m thinking studying is better done in the winter.

Library lament
The library in my home town is horrible.
It was closed during the easter, which I figure is normal though. But it turns out in the regular days it doesn’t open until 11!
So thus in these late hours we entered the library to study. There is a section for that sort of thing in the library actually, populated by people using dictionaries to solve crosswords and reading the free papers.

Time's Eye
While on the train to my home town during the “spring break” I finished Arthur C Clark and Stephen Baxter’s Time’s Eye. It’s the first book of a series, and mostly serves for presenting characters I guess.
It’s science fiction, the premise is that some event mixes several timelines to one mesh. The characters tries to figure out what happened, and what to do...

Fed. up
So I spent around 4 hours trying to install Fedora on an old computer.
Why? Well, I thought I had a few hours to spare. I thought I might learn something. I thought installing Linux now was alot less hassle than 5 years ago.
I guess it isn’t. Everything took alot of time, was alot of work that I didnt have time for, and just pushed me further from Linux environments.

Future
If this semester goes fine I will do my bachelor thesis next semester. The director of studies have started looking a bit for advisors for me. I will be doing something with geometry. I’m also hoping for original results, that would be the greatest.
I got my Riemannian Geometry book today (Do Carmo). It looks oh so fun, but I can’t start reading just yet, stupid programs to do for...

"Career"
Yesterday the student union for science and mathematics students (LUNA) had organized a Career-day for mathematicians and theoretical physicists.
The premise was “36% of the students go on to PhD-studies, what are the rest of us going to do?”.
Well, first presentation was about being a cryptologist. However, the person talking ran out of things he was alous to tell us after no more...
